This album could have been good... With the proper production (too many bleeps , reverb , electronic noises, doubled vocals, dated sounding synths , a proper guitarsound which does Justin parts justice)... and some songs are ,let's face it ,not good enough. For example : counting spooks : not much happening in the first part , nothing that grabs you , the second part is better the moment Justin guitar kicks in .

Waiting to listen to the album on vinyl tomorrow but I've treat myself and listened to The Pulse since that doesn't feature on vinyl. HOW GOOD IS THE PULSE???!!! It's not . Everyone entitled to his own opinion ofcourse but for me it lacks that little aggressive edge and Justins guitar. Too much oohs and aahs. I think Elliot's vocals are way too much present on this album

This album is making me realise I was way too harsh on TWOYL. It sounds like a downright flawless piece of art compared to this. Never understood the hate for TWOYL - it's such a mature and well pulled-off album. Violence sounds a bit naive, but I like the majority of it and with time, might even find quality in the songs that I don't particularly like at the moment - I've listened to the whole thing only once for now.

I was just listening to some Violence acoustic versions. Tom's still such a great songwriter, I just wish he wouldn't go down this overproduction path. It's been a problem since Chris left, come to think of it.
I never realised how much I wanted a stripped-back Editors record until now. Have Tom on piano or guitar or both, Elliott or Justin play whatever melodic or textural parts Tom isn't playing, get Russ to add some basslines, Ed to get a beat going behind an actual kit, and that's it. No electronic walls of sound, no fancy production tricks, just basic unfiltered Tom Smith songwriting. They could make a great record like that if they chose to.

They perform a lot of Violence track acoustically - maybe an idea for a further release? On the second try Nothingness also clicked with me, so that leaves on Darkness - which I think will take at least a 100 listens to come to terms with how cheesy it is. P.S. The last couple of minutes of Counting Spooks is slowly becoming one of my favourite pieces of music, ever.

Finally I like nothingness, belong, violence and counting spooks(except the last part...70's disco time)....but I'm sure it will be better live!
Surprised by NSBTW...I like the piano and the atmosphere.(the live version was boring)
Darkness reminds me of a boys band's song.
Maybe I miss Tom's dark voice and more guitare.
And I really LOVE ITLAOTE...that's the difference!

I don't get the hate about the production of this album. I think this album is the best produced album out of all 6, and maybe even my favourite Editors album song-wise too. The productions sound very thick and full, bass and drums provide a very firm basis. Sonically there are a lot of different effects in the background that may surprise you. I also don't get why people are complaining about the guitars not being loud enough in the mix, this was a deliberate (and in my opinion the right) choice. They blend in really nice with the electronics. The vocals are also really well recorded, they sound very clean and full. There is a lot of things going on but they are all mixed properly.

The exact opposite of how I feel about Cold and Darkness, but not others.

The album has it's gems, but overall it's probably the worst for me. Well, back to waiting for Interpol's new album I guess...
