They were mentioned in the thread about Interpol as one of the bands Editors fans seem to also love. I have to say I only got curious when Editors were repeatedly mentioning them and praising their albums. It took me a long, long time to properly fall in love with their music. I was already a fan for the release of their two latest record, and for both albums, it took me months until they grew on me. But after that happened, for both of the recods, I've said it's their best yet I saw them live several times and have always enjoyed their shows a lot. The audience seems to really be into them, and everyone around me was singing and swaying to me music, and it was a much calmer experience than most of the shows I've been to, but it was amazing every single time... Can't wait to see them again, whenever it may be... So, any other fans?

I wouldn't call myself a fan (yet), but yep, I got curious too as Editors were constantly mentioning them. I've slowly fallen in love with the last 2 albums and I'm fairly sure the older ones will follow at some point

To me The National is a band with a lot of depth. Their music was growing on me over time. I like Matts voice and lyrics a lot, how the songs express certain feelings and how the music perfectly fits to that. Furthermore I was impressed how unmasked they appear in their movie. But sometimes there are just to many slow songs for my taste. One commented at youtube that the National was music for "sad, old and lonely people". I don't agree, but there's a overload of dark feelings in their music which doesn't fit at all times. I can't see what they really have in common with Editors. Furthermore they cannot beat Editors live (no one can!). The were musically/technically perfect at the gig, but despite Matt was walking the audience several times during the concert they were really "far away" and definitely not with the crowd.

I haven't seen the movie yet. I bought the DVD at one of my shows this year, but I'm still hoping I may catch it somewhere in the cinema.
I too find it often overwhelming to listen to the whole album at once because the songs can sound same-ish, particularly if you're just getting into them, and there's not that much variety. I definitely need to be in a certain mood for them. But at the same time, I find their music very soothing and they're one of the first choices for me when I'm on long trains travels or need something to unwind and relax before going to bed.
Captain Crieff, I too went backwards when becoming familiar with their music. I started with Boxer, but I also mixed it up with High Violet, which had just come out around the time I discovered them.

I love everything The National has put out. Everything EXCEPT Sugar Wife.
Still can't stand the song.

My best friend and I often argue which is the better (best) band. Editors or The National (Editors is my pick, obviously).
The National is really really good and every chance you get to see them live, you should grab.
Also, check out the song they made for the fantastic Portal 2 game. It is called Exile Vilify.

Well I saw you tweeting about LNZNDRF. But I never found out about EL VY. So hey, I am a happy camper. I really like LNZDRF and EL VY. I hope they'll still get together and release a new The National album this year though.
