I wonder if that is part of the reason the alternatives were released. Most of the people that were already fans (from the Chris-era) prefer the alternative songs over the album-ones. For the band (as they've said in interviews - see the Interviews thread, the translated OOR-article in particular) they already expected some songs to be a slap in the face for fans. But its what they liked best, and its the sound they want to share. Perhaps the alternative releases is some sort of hat-tip; ' we know, we know'. Huh? I'm a fan from the Chris era and I think the album versions easily trump the alternative ones. Apart from maybe Forgiveness and LIAF. Maybe.

Of course, it could be formed out of confirmation bias, but I feel most fans prefer the alternative ones. And that theory could work, as already-fans are more likely to buy deluxe versions than new fans.

Negativity is normally someone expressing the growing pains of life. It's when someone is out growing a band.
I've come on here & been negative but that's only because I've fallen out of love with Editors.
Personally I've not liked the last two albums. I think they lack a cutting edge without Chris & they now sound pretty generic. I loved Editors because they would manipulate my emotional world, they were dramatic & exciting but now? meh, they've become predictable & boring.
Some flashes are still there but it's watered down. They are a completely different band since Chris left & i'm okay with that, it's just not my thing.
I'm just thankful I saw them live when Chris was still with them, Fingers In the Factories live is truly special.

Personal positives taken from the last two albums / shows.
I consider these songs to fit the context of Editors.
'The Weight' album version. 'Nothing' Live version. Tom with the ukulele & high pitch guitar from Justin (first werchter performance) 'Two Hearted Spider' Live version from the first werchter performance. 'No Harm' album version.
'Salvation' Almost made my list but it's far too repetitive and doesn't really go anywhere.
